Sonic and Autism

I noticed a lot of Sonic fans have autism/asperger's. What is the appeal of Sonic to those affected with this syndrome? Why is it so prevalent on the internet? Perhaps they want to be like him, a fast hedgehog with a mouth full of attitude? Getting over their social troubles like Sonic?
